If you’ve ever owned any vintage or boutique pedals, you’ve perhaps heard of “modding” your pedal. Ibanez tube-screamers are a pedal in particular that often get modded for instance. Usually players do this in order to get more juice out of a fuzz box or perhaps warm up a tone in the reverb unit. Every-so-often a company will see how popular some of these mods become and will release their own version for mass consumption. So, MXR has decided that their Custom Badass pedal needed such a tweak! Here it is straight from the horse’s mouth: For added flexibility, we’ve added a 100HZ cut and boost control that allows for a more focused EQ when cut, or a beefier tone when boosted. The Bump switch engages an alternate EQ voicing that boosts the lows and mids. Put it in front of the ’78 Custom Badass Distortion for a slew of amp-like gain structures that won’t mask your tone. So there you have it. If you were ever interested in the ’78 Custom Badass pedal, we pray you take a look at this new modded version. We’d hate for you to buy the new version and then suddenly have to pay another $200 to have it essentially be the same as this one. [Via Guitar Noize]

Fender has announced the arrival of their first ever artist-signature amplifier, the “EC” Eric Clapton amplifier line. For a while now, many of the old-school Fender purists have been craving for a hand-wired tube amp with the Fender logo on it. Well, that time has now come with the introduction of the EC Fender line. Fully made in the ‘states and featuring all hand-wired circuitry, the EC amp line from Fender is what the tube amps of old used to be. Looking through Fender’s photos reveals some pretty old-school looking wiring. From Fender’s Page: In a historic collaboration, Fender introduces its first artist signature amplifiers—EC Series amps bearing the name of legendary guitarist Eric Clapton. Built to the exacting specifications of Clapton himself, the three amps—the EC Twinolux™, EC Tremolux™ and EC Vibro-Champ®—are fascinating variations on their original ’50s-era ancestors (the ’57 Twin™, ’57 Deluxe™ and ’57 Champ®, respectively), and are our answer to his call for special models with distinctive features. Handmade in the United States, all three amp models feature ’50s—era output tube bias tremolo (which produces a more throbbing pulse than later Fender tremolo circuits) and a switchable power attenuator (reduces speaker output), in addition to other premium features. In a historic career now in its sixth decade, Eric Clapton has long been known as one of the world’s foremost exponents of classic Fender tweed amp tone, and the three new amps bearing his imprint present the pinnacle of personally inspired amp tone for stage and studio alike. Each is a must for Clapton fans and guitarists who want the ultimate in tweed tube amp performance. There’s a pretty awesome video of Buddy Guy demoing out the Twinolux: For more information check out Fender’s Site.

Many of you might recall a few months ago when Paul Gilbert released his signature pick-up from Dimarzio. During the video announcement Paul briefly mentioned the pickups coming in his new signature line. Fast forward a few months, and some interesting questions later, and we now have the production model Fireman! Whilst still being very similar to the original Fireman, this new model has a few slight changes. The first being the pickups have been swapped out for the new Dimarzio Injectors, which Paul demoed back several months ago. The neck has been thinned down ever so slightly to accompany the faster players. Lastly, the wood has been changed from Korina to Mahogany. The big factor here is that, apparently, Korina is only made in a few plants and is a dangerous wood to work on. So if it drops the price a few grand, sign me up (word on the street is that they’re going for $899). From ol’ Paul: “Burning tones scream out of this guitar! The FRM100TR is more shocking proof that Ibanez listens to what guitar players want. In this case, the guitarist was ME. It all started when I flipped their Iceman body upside down, renamed it the FIREMAN, and created a guitar that looks like an electric brontosaurus. I demanded a beefy set-neck and a Tight-Tune bridge for maximum sustain and solid feel. Big, natural tones come from the DiMarzio® Injector™ pickups on the outside and an Area 67™ in the middle. I chose tall frets to make bending and vibrato easy and the intonation accurate. The knobs are out of the way, so I don’t bump into them when I attack the strings. And most importantly, the Fireman inspires me to play ALL THE TIME. You know what to do. Pick one up and ROCK!” Consume more here.

The picture above is one of their *ahem* “Crem-de-la-crem” guitars. Yup, that’s wildcard #7! We’ve also got a pretty decent stock on the Desolation line which features (above other things) set-neck design, matte finish neck back, flame-maple tops, as well as active EMG pickups (on select lines). The colors are probably some of the best in the business that we’ve seen (especially for a $650 guitar!!!). VERY comparable to a PRS that usually sell for over a thousand. Anyways, be sure to check them out at both stores or see the couple that we currently have on our online store.

Though details are scarce, apparently Fender is releasing a signature Kurt Cobain Jaguar. As part of the 20 year anniversary for the legendary album “Nevermind”, Fender has decided to release a limited edition relic’d copy of Cobains famous Jaguar. Details are rather scarce, but according to our friends over at Guitar Noize this guitar features Dimarzio PAF and Super-Distortion pickups as well as some Gotoh hardware. Pretty cool looking axe if you ask me. UPDATE: Fender has made this official. Here’s their statement: “Fender® introduces one of its most distinctive signature models ever, the Kurt Cobain Jaguar®-meticulously modeled on the battered and highly unusual 1965 Jaguar that Cobain wielded during the heady early-’90s era when Nirvana ruled rock and led a musically stunning and culturally subversive movement. Fender craftsmen have reproduced Cobain’s battle-hardened left-handed Jaguar down to the last unusual detail, including its worn finish, dual humbucking pickups and unique electronics and controls (which were already in place when Kurt acquired the guitar in summer 1991). Unique features include an alder body with Road Worn aged finish and hardware treatment, bound fretboard with pearloid dot markers, Stratocaster headstock shape with 1950s-style “spaghetti” logo, DiMarzio® humbucking DP103 PAF 36th Anniversary neck pickup and DP100 Super Distortion bridge pickup, triple knurled “chrome-dome” knob configuration (volume-volume-tone), three-position toggle switch, black chrome Adjusto-Matic™ bridge and Gotoh® sealed tuners. Available in right- and left-handed versions. Accessories include a black textured vinyl hard-shell case and an exclusive Fender Kurt Cobain book with photos and commentary by Charles Peterson and an insightful interview with Nirvana guitar tech Earnie Bailey.” Looks like street price will hover around $1,300. Awesome. Via Guitar Noize
